Sander Hicks
Zen Carpentry
Ever
since our daughter was born a year ago, we knew the day was coming when
our two children would share a 7’6” x 11’6” bedroom. Lofts were
the only way to accommodate our current and future sleeping needs in a
relatively small space. After an extensive web search, we reached
out to multiple local carpenters.
Sander was quick
to respond. He spent time over the phone talking through our
initial design concept and gave me an approximate budget range.
He was available in less than a week to meet at our apartment to review
field conditions and flush out the design. And he developed a
series of design sketches along with the final pricing prior to
commencing work.
Most importantly,
Sander is a craftsman. We wanted a loft that was functional AND
beautiful. We wanted our children to appreciate that the wood in
our home was once a living, natural material. In addition to the
practical structure and support design, Sander created a functional
Loft sculpture. He combined a variety of wood species, timber
products, salvaged materials and finishes into a veritable bunk-bed
tree-house.
When we ask our
son about his Loft he says, “My bed is made of wood. Wood comes
from trees.” We couldn’t ask for anything more.

“Spectacular!
Sander listened to exactly how we wanted our porch
restored and reconstructed. He worked with craftsmanship and care. I
love to sit on my new front porch!”
