On March 23,
the Dirksen Senate Office Building was the
scene of a bizarre coronation ceremony, when
a US Congressman placed a gold crown on Reverend
Sun Myung Moon, the founder and head of the
Unification Church.
The large crown
was supposedly a peace award, but top Moon
official Hwan Kwak said the crowning meant
that America is saying to Reverend Moon, –quote–"Please
become my king."
The Unification
Church asserted that 81 Senators and Congressmen
attended the ceremony.
Some who went claimed they thought they were
to attend to an awards ceremony for fellow
congressmen, not Moon's coronation.
The Reverend
Moon was found guilty of tax evasion during
the 1980's. Today, he owns the conservative
Washington Times newspaper and UPI wire service.
Moon, who came
to power originally as an arms dealer, is
friends with the Bush Family. In 1995, Ex
President and Barbara Bush gave six speeches
on behalf of a charity group run by Reverend
Moon's wife. In November 1996, the elder Bush,
while visiting Buenos Aires, praised the Reverend
Moon's newspapers, calling the right-leaning
Washington Times, "an independent voice."
One year later, Rev. Moon donated a million
dollars to the George Bush Presidential Library
in Texas.
At his "coronation"
Moon declared that in a vision the souls of
Hitler and Stalin confirmed to him that he
is now humanity's "Messiah, Returning Lord,
and True Parent."
