John
Dear is a prophet.
Dear
is fast becoming a nationally-known Christian/Spiritual
voice for peace, nonviolence and disarmament.
On Febraury 26, Dear comes from his parish in
Springer, NM, to Taos. He will speak about the
ideas in his latest book, in a talk titled
Gandhi and the Way of Nonviolence. Dear writes
that the call of Gandhis work "challenges
us to become prophets and apostles of nonviolence."
John Dear makes Gandhis message relevant
to a world paralyzed in terror. Mohandes Gandhi:
Essential Writings (Maryknoll) re-introduces
"Truth-Force" as a vibrant religious/political
counterpoint to the false promises of permanent
war. Publishers Weekly wrote, "Dear has
chosen accessible, passionate excerpts from Gandhi's
writings, resulting in a valuable compendium for
students and spiritual devotees."
In
August, Dear was ordered to stay away from a prayer
vigil/protest at Los Alamos by Archbishop Michael
Sheehan. In November, the New Mexico National
Guard tried to intimidate him outside his church.
A coalition of like-minded Taos organizations
have formed a coalition to co-sponsor this event:
Action Coalition of Taos, Metta Projects Theatre,
Lama Foundation, Veterans for Peace & Pax
Christi-Taos.
Dear
is the author and editor of twenty books, such
as "Jesus the Rebel," and "Mary of Nazareth, Prophet
of Peace." He recently edited "Apostle of Peace:
Essays in Honor of Daniel Berrigan." As a priest,
he has travelled the world and witnessed state
violence throughout Central America, and sanctions
in Iraq.

Public Blog Discussion on the above National
Guard incident. (Interesting for the mix of responses
to Dear, from jaded and condemnatory to supportive
and curious.)
"If John Dear had a hammer, he'd hammer
on an F-15 fighter bomberand has, at
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro,
NC, in 1993, a symbolic attempt to turn swords
into plowshares that landed him in jail for
eight months. All told, he's been arrested
more than 75 times for acts of civil disobedience
against war, nuclear weapons, and the death
penalty."
